Earlier this month in my APA President-elect campaign announcement video I stated:
“Last summer we learned that the American Psychological Association colluded with the government to make it easier for psychologists to assist in torture-related interrogations. As a result, psychologists practicing under our ethics code legitimized the Bush Administration’s 'enhanced interrogation' program."
This is incorrect.
Here is a corrected statement:
"The American Psychological Association colluded with the Department of Defense to issue loose ethical guidelines in return for gaining favor with the Department of Defense. A consequence of this collusion? Psychologists could participate in the Bush Administration’s 'enhanced interrogation' program without breaking the APA ethics code."
I am sorry for this mistake and endeavor to be more accurate in the future.
Thank you to those who have brought this to my attention.
